Sissy

The Story of Sissy - RIP - 11-25-15

Sissy arrived at Equine Voices in December of 2014. She had been the lone horse of a woman in Seligman who had been murdered by her husband. So, unlike many rescues, Sissy had been loved. She was overweight when she first arrived at Arizona Equine Rescue, but by the time that she reached Equine Voices, she had become very depressed and was losing weight. She did not want to be touched.

She arrived in the same van with Frankie, who was also about 30 and very depressed. Almost immediately, they began to bond. They stood near each other more and more. The staff and volunteers at Equine Voices took the two as a challenge and gave them much attention and love.

When the weather began to get colder, Sissy began to have trouble getting up off of the ground. Sometimes, Ted could help her up. Some days the Elephant Head Volunteer Fire dept. helped her up with ropes. One day, Rudy used the back hoe to lift her. Dr. Escalada prescribed strong meds that helped. It was noticed that she could get up from her left side only, Ted enlisted various helpers to roll her when she went down on the right.

Angela Meixell had started visiting Sissy and Frankie twice a day, to massage Sissy and work on cheering them up. On March 31, Angela and Tim Meixell moved the horses to their Tumacacori home. Both horses responded positively right away and Sissy started getting up on her own.

Sissy had eight good months in Tumacacori. She and Frankie were rarely more than a few feet apart. She also seemed to love human attention, preferring grooming to food. Her coat was shiny and soft.

When cold weather began in Mid October, Sissy was unable to get up from the right again. Tim and Angela learned to roll her over. That worked for five weeks, but on November 25, she could not get up from either side. Her eyes were bright and her will was strong, but she just couldn’t get up. After more than twenty hours, Dr. Escalada put her gently to sleep.

Tim, Angela and especially Frankie miss her very much.

Mark Your Calendars For Our Giant Rummage Sale – Note the Date Change!

Saturday, January 9, 2016

Last year's Rummage Sale was such a success, we decided to have one again this year! Please gather up your unwanted items and bring them to us to help the Herd! Please, no clothes or books as they do not sell well and please clean your items as that makes them more sellable. We also need people to volunteer 3 days prior and the day of the sale; organizing, pricing, set up, sales, and tear-down. If you can spare folding tables, please write your name on the bottom and bring them out to us as we can never have too many tables!

Dear Equine Voices Volunteers,

We are planning a Rummage Sale at the ranch in three weeks. Saturday, January 9, 2016 is the day! We would like to form a committee to help with this event. Please respond to Angie Werner angelawerner214@yahoo.com (not Angie Wilson) if you would like to help organize and work the garage sale.

• Prior to the sale we will need help pricing and organizing items.

• The day of the sale we will need assistance at the sale.

• Please gather all of your treasures (no clothing or books for this sale) and get them cleaned up and ready for our Huge Sale.
