Europe Close To Banning Horse Meat From Mexico

The European Union (EU) is close to imposing a ban on the import of horse meat from Mexico.

The director of the Food and Veterinary Office of the European Union Commission, Michael Scannell, revealed that a ban was close when he addressed the recent European Parliament’s Intergroup meeting in Brussels.

He also voiced concerns around some of the serious welfare issues identified around the long-haul transport of horses from the United States to Mexico, saying some animals arrived dead or unable to stand.

He also revealed that stricter conditions would make it harder for Canada to export meat to Europe that was derived from horses imported from the US.

New York Mayor De Blasio to propose horse carriage ban next week

Mayor Bill de Blasio will introduce city council legislation next week banning all horse carriages by 2016 — while helping the drivers find other lines of work, The Post has learned.

The green permits cost at least $3,000 each.

There 5,632 green cabs on the road that have gotten the permit and turned their liveries into boro taxis. The city has had 68 officially licensed horse-drawn carriages since the late 1940's.

The equine industry generates about $19 million a year. Drivers interviewed last night gave a resounding neigh.
