Our Latest Rescues, Meet Ben and Micky

Meet our latest rescues; Ben from the White Mountains and Micky from the Phoenix area. These two very different equines were brought to us in very good condition due to the care and treatment given to them by their respective rescuers up north.

Ben was rescued by Christine of Equine Well Being Rescue in Snowflake, Arizona. Ben was living right next door to her rescue, and when Christine noticed that Ben and his companion horses had eaten all the grass that grew on the ground there and that they all began to lose weight, she offered the owners help with feed... Shortly after she offered to take Ben off their hands and give him the care he needed at Equine Wellbeing. Equine Wellbeing will continue to monitor the care given to the rest of the herd. Thank you Christine for taking such good care of Ben, and giving this gentle giant love, good food and shelter. We are thrilled to introduce him to Gulliver soon!

Ben is a big guy standing 16.3 hands and now weighing in over 1,800 pounds.

When rescued by Equine Wellbeing he weighed 1,345 pounds.

Micky was being kept at a boarding facility along with a thoroughbred. The two horses were rescued by Gwen Cleary as they were not receiving proper care, due to financial hardship. Gwen does not run an official rescue so she called us to see if we had room. Christine of Equine Wellbeing was kind enough to pick up Micky on her way south while transporting Ben. These two horses, big and small, are now good buddies!

Micky's hooves were in desperate need of a trim. He was subject to founder in the past, and attention to a strict diet and professional trimming was necessary. Thank you Gwen for giving this little guy what he needed!

ASPCA – Every Horse is at Risk

Horses Need Your Voice, Please Speak Up Today

Urge your members of Congress to support the SAFE Act

In the midst of the Triple Crown excitement, we can't lose sight of the horses who are not in the limelight. Each year approximately 150,000 American horses are trucked to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico, where they are brutally slaughtered. This is a terrifying end for these animals, who often endure painful, repeated blows to the head before being dismembered—sometimes while still alive and conscious. Many are former racehorses and show ponies.

The Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act is critical legislation being considered by your federal lawmakers in Washington, D.C., which would protect horses by prohibiting their slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. and banning their export for that purpose.

But until this ban is in place, every horse, even the one in the winner's circle today, is just one bad sale away from the slaughterhouse.

What You Can Do

The cruel, unnecessary and predatory practice of horse slaughter can be stopped for good, but we need your help. Please visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center today to quickly and easily contact your U.S. senators and representative and urge them to support and cosponsor the SAFE Act.

It is critical that your legislators hear from constituents like you in support of this bill. Even if you have contacted them before, please do so again.

Thank you, America, for being a voice for horses.
